Don Det, Laos

Randi and I spent the day reading in a hammock along the riverside in Don Det. Don Det, one of the 4000 islands, is a charmingly rustic village. There are water buffalo on the beach, sand roads, and roosters roaming the streets. We had dinner at a restaurant run by transvestites, overlooking the Mekong river. It's the perfect place to spend a day of relaxation, which we needed after the past 24 hours of travel!

After one bus ride, a missing bus, and a few tuk-tuk rides, we reached the terminal in which our sleeper bus was located. I was slightly concerned to be taking a sleeper after an experience in India, where I was enclosed in what I'll not so fondly describe as a microwave. Well, this was even worse! Randi and I were stuck in the back, where 5 cushions were positioned with only one small slot for an entrance. There was no possible way to sit up for 12 hours and no air conditioning. I'll be honest, it could have been worse, as the other 3 stuck in "the casket" with us were 3 good looking, friendly Israeli guys. It was a long, restless nite! Although, Randi did manage to get 6 hrs of sleep with the help of Ambien. We were quite happy when we finally escaped into the long boat for Don Det!

Tonight we are looking forward to a bonfire on the beach. Tomorrow at 8 am, we leave by bus (not a sleeper:)) for Phnom Penh, Cambodia!
